We are really getting into the grove here in 1b! These kids are motivated to learn and are still asking for more homework! I think at this point they are definitely just loving my reaction when they ask for it, but I'll take it. First grade is a lot of work, so as you may have noticed these kids are TIRED. They will build stamina and become more familiar with the routine, but a god nights sleep is always helpful.

Upcoming Events-

Tuesday, September 21st-  Grade 1 MAP TESTING- If your child can get a good nights sleep and eat a good breakfast it would be helpful for our morning of MAP testing

Tuesday, September 21st BSS ICE CREAM SOCIAL 4:40-6:30- Come and hang out with all your friends for one last ice cream treat!

Thursday September 23rd- MAP TESTING

Monday, September 27th- 1B Come on in and Check out 1b!

Since we are not having Open House this year, I thought it would be nice to have you in and see our class and your child's desk.  If you are free next Monday from 5:00-5:30, we would love to see you in 1b! You can peek around and I can answers any questions you may have. If you cannot make this time, please let me know and I am happy to have you at another time.

We always love taking pictures on the first day to show just how much they grow from September to June. This year we want to welcome Devin and Maggie. They are both BSS ROCKSTARS! They have made so many befriends and are so going, you would never know that they just started here at BSS.

Maggie is all smiles at her new school!

Devin is already the mayor of BSS, he greets everyone as they walk by the room!

How cute are these kids!

It's a GREAT DAY to be in 1B!

After a long day we have a lot of fun ending out day with Go Noodle dance parties!

In Phonics, we are working on letter formation. We focus on a few different letters each day and we go through their sounds and correct letter formation. We are also practicing how to write our short vowel words. We say the word, then tap it, then write it.  Every Friday we will have a trick word test. Learning the trick words is an important part of the first grade curriculum. As you know, the list comes home each Monday and it would be great if you could check-in with your child to make sure they know these words by Friday.

In math, we are working on different strategies to use when solving addition problems. We have been using the number line, the ten frames and counters. We do a lot of math fact drill in first grade. Every night the children will have a math fact sheet so they can start to memorize these facts. On Fridays, they will have one minute to try and complete the number fact we worked on that week. This will not count as a grade, it is a fun game that motivates the children to practice during the week.

In Science, we have been having fun with our Friday science experiments. The children have a science journal where they write about what we have learned from our lesson. Last week we did the pencil through the ziplock bag trick. We only had a little water on the floor and so many happy faces. They were all screaming at cheers for each other as the pencil was going right through the bag filled with water.

In Religion, we are learning about all God's creations. We read the creation story and discussed what God made on each day. The children love when I read stories from the Children's Bible.
