Thank you~
Thank you for coming to Open House and seeing your kids classroom. It was great to see all of you coloring away in your child's seat! I also appreciate the books that some of your purchased for our class from the Book Fair, we love new books! Thank you Mrs. Carroll for joining us today and walking to the library with us.
Blog Information-
Specials Schedule, Celebrity Information and other Class Procedures are listed on the blog.
Social Group- Mrs. Lomardi does a social group a few times a week. The group discusses feelings, how to be respectful, and many other day day skills that are important to master in first grade. They often times read books or do creative activities during this time in 1A.
Religion- I teach both classes Religion and they love it. It is awesome to see them interacting with their other first grade friends. The children love hearing Bible Stories, writing prayers to God and making up their own personal prayers.
Guided Reading- We tested all the kids on their oral reading skills, using the Fountas and Pinnell assessments. The goal of first grade is to climb the ladder and become a fluent and confident reader. This program offers great texts to help measure and record the growth that each child is making. We then made guided reading groups so that each child is reading books at they can read with success and comprehension. Mrs. Duchaney is also with us during this small group learning time, she is wonderful with the children and specializes in reading.
Phonics- In phonics, we finished reviewing all of the letters in the alphabet. I was impressed with their tests. We discussed the corresponding keyword and sound for each letter. We also practiced letter formation. Automaticity of consistent letter formation requires much practice, which is why we practice both in school and for homework. In class, we use individual dry erase boards for practice, as well as skywriting with consistent verbal cues. Skywriting creates gross motor memory.
Math- In math, we will begin Unit 2 which teaches subtraction. The children will solve problems by finding the missing part. Children will also write and solve addition and subtraction number sentences. For homework, we will reinforce the lesson we did each day. For our math facts, the children will now do the plus 2 tables. I feel strongly that if these children can memorize these math facts, they will be mathematicians in grade 2!
Highlight of the Week-
Our walk to the Library and Park was a huge success! The children learned about fiction and non-fiction books, the different ways to find a book and we had a tour of the library. The librarian was impressed with their behavior and great manners.
