We welcomed Fall this week with some amazing weather! Recess was very enjoyable! We started this week with a beautiful Fall walk as we discussed all the signs of Fall by using our Senses.
Math-
This week in math, the students were learning how to subtract a part from the whole to find the missing part. We began with some review of the part-part-whole concept. This week we learned about finding the missing part when we are given the other part and the whole. We practiced the missing parts of 6, 7, 8 and 9. We also began using this part-part-whole relationship to write number sentences to show subtraction. This is hard for the children because they can't see or visualize the missing part.
Try at home: Show your child 8 items (coins, fruit, candy, etc.) Hide some in a bowl. Show them the part that isn't in the bowl (part I know). Ask if they can figure out how many you hid in the bowl (the missing part).
Phonics-
The focus in this unit is on reading and spelling words with three sounds. Students have learned how to "tap" these sounds. Tapping is a skill that students will use in phonics to help them segment the sounds of a word. In this unit we are also practicing alphabetical order. Students practiced this by using their magnetic tile boards to sequentially match letter tiles on the letter squares.
The children are doing an awesome job writing their short vowel words. We are lucky to have Mrs Duchany working with us during our phonics time.
