In Phonics, we have been working hard in phonics, we practiced the new glued sounds -all, -am, -an and applied these concepts to both reading and spelling. We read the controlled text "Macks and Bugs." Students were asked to "scoop" the sentences to practice reading with fluency. After reading we discussed the story and students made a story map about the characters, setting and main events of the story. Then students were asked to draw a picture about the story. This is a great way to practice comprehension and writing about reading. It is in your child's yellow folder tonight, for extra practice they can read it to you. We just introduced a new concept, which is learning basewords and the suffix s. Sometimes the suffix /s/ makes the /z/ sound. For example, in the word bugs.. the s at the end sounds like the /z/ sound. We are teaching the children to write the baseword first then add on the suffix s. We will practice marking these words all week.
Example of words to practice at home-
dogs pegs chills rugs kids bills bells beds mops
lips packs jugs ships cops wets kiss off ball tall ball
Dictation Sentences-

Pam hugs the pup when she gets sad.
Where are the dogs fed?

There are six mops out back.
TRICK WORDS: As we move along in our phonics program, more and more trick words are being added to our list. It is important to practice reading and spelling these trick words often at home with your child.

Watching These Kids Learn to Read is so Exciting!
They beg to read the BOB books everyday at DEAR time!
In Religion, we are focusing on the Christmas season and Advent. We started our day with a great Advent prayer service on zoom. The middle school students lead us in prayer, and 1b was listening and praying and singing. What a nice way to start our day and prepare for the Christmas Season.
Upcoming Events-
We are meeting today after school to discuss ways we can make the Christmas season fun and memorable in 1b. My hopes is that we plan something that is meaningful for those in need and will make the students feel good about giving this Christmas season. Stay tuned for all the exciting plans!
