In Phonics, In phonics, we have learned all of the short vowel sounds. The children have done well writing their short vowel sounds. We have  been doing a lot of sentence dictation exercises. These daily activities will help the children with their sentence writing skills.  This week we learned our digraphs. Students practiced reading and spelling words containing digraphs, with much focus this week on the digraph "ck." Students learned that we now know three ways to make the /k/ sound: c, k, ck. They learned that "ck" is used at the end of a word following the short vowel.  They did awesome on their trick word assessments, they are also in their red folders.

The kids love using their magnetic tiles in phonics class

In Math, We finished our unit on addition. The children learned several different strategies   to show addition equations. They all did well on their math assessments that went home on Monday.   We started our subtraction unit. The children are learning that when something goes away the number gets smaller and you use subtraction as our math equation.  The children are now learning that when doing word problems they need to listen to the key words and decide if they need to add or subtraction to answer the problem. They all worked very hard on their math facts this week. we are going to move on to +4's, the children seem ready and know their facts to this point. I am so proud of how determined they are each Friday to come in begging to take their timed tests. They are a DETERMINED CREW!

In Science, we did a fun activity with the Grade 7 STEM class. We did a lesson on speed. The first graders were timed doing several activities they had to run, skip, and frog leaps. The 7th grade will now spend some time calculating to see which speeds were the fastest and which ones took longer. We will reconnect with them to discuss the results. It was great to see the first graders looking up to the 7th graders. They were all so well behaved and great role models for peer learning.
