It was a Long Week of Learning in 1b.. these kids are TIRED!

We have been busy in 1B!

We have been learning a lot in phonics!. In this unit, students have learned new glued sounds. This week, students practiced the "ng" glued sounds: ang, ing, ong, ung. In these glued sounds, the three letters' sounds are  difficult to separate so they are "glued" together. Students also learned new trick words: why, by, my, try, should, could, would, put and two.  In their folders are a current list of all the trick words that your child should know. Practice makes perfect!

This week in math, we worked on counting and number patterns to 120.  During this topic, students will learn ways to count to 120. This week, students worked on numbers 11-20. Next week, we will be using a hundred's chart to skip count. Students will learn new math vocabulary words pertaining to the hundreds chart: column and row. It will be helpful at home to practice skip counting (by 2's, 5's and 10's) to help them with this topic. The math fact game is going well. Talk about a motivated group of kids, they are very eager to pass! I tell them to keep practicing every night for just 5 minutes!

This week in religion, we discussed the Blessed Trinity: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. This involved a discussion about prayer and the sign of the cross. The children always use Religion time to share sweet stories, it amazes me how big their hearts can be at such a  young age. This week we talked about handicapped children, The children were all really so caring and had so many kind stories or connections.

In Science, we are staring our Unit on Solids, Liquids and Gas. The children learned about the words Mass and  Matter and what they mean. The children did a great class of reading an article with their Science partner and highlighting all the important information.

Guided Reading- We are working hard in our reading groups. Please remember that your child needs to read at least 4 nights a week to you. This will help them continue to grow, we can't lose their stride now. They are all reading with fluency and it makes me so HAPPY!! If you need help with the appropriate level for your child I would be happy to meet with you to discuss.
