November News

Time is flying by.. how can it be November already!

In phonics, students learned about the bonus letter. At the end of a one syllable word, if the word has one vowel that is short and immediately followed by f, l, s at the end, double that consonant. The extra letter is considered a bonus because it is extra. The bonus letter does not make a sound so we don't tap it. Students were also introduced to their first glued sound -all. The bonus "l" in all changes the vowel sound. We will continue practicing this concept next week. We are also learning many new trick words. Please practice this list a few times each week, we do them everyday in school as well so that they become very familiar with them.

Oral Reading- Reading at home with your child each night is so important. We have learned many of the sounds now and the children should be becoming more fluent and confident in their skills. We are sending home a cute little reading challenge with your child today. If you need help or suggestions on good books at your child's appropriate level let me know and I can help you find some great books for them.

In math, we worked on doubles facts, adding two numbers that are the same. After practicing some doubles facts, we then built upon this concept by learning near doubles. For example, we know that 5+5=10, so 5+6=11. We also worked on facts with 5 and making 10 on a ten-frame. At home, you can practice doubles facts with your child. Flashcards are always a great way to practice!

Religion- The children continue to enjoy listening to our weekly Bible Stories. We just leaved about the Wedding at Cana and they are amazed by Jesus many miracles. They also have been writing their own prayers to God, which have been so sweet.

Halloween Party- The Halloween Party was AWESOME! Thank you so much to Mrs. Santos, Mrs. Clough, Mrs. Lenhart, and the Hendserson family for all the help and supplies you brought in. We also enjoyed some delicious carrots and cucumbers the next day from the Masterson family. We really needed veggies after the sugar high these kids were on!

YUMMY VEGGIES!!!

Enrichment-  The Walpole Fire Department came and did a great presentation on Fire Safety. The children were great listeners and had some really good questions. The firefighter who presented was once in my first grade class and the kids just couldn't believe  that!

Check out some pictures from our lesson on Pumpkin Math and Science. This cross curricular activity allowed students to use math and science skills such as counting, estimating and measuring to collect data about pumpkins.
